Young humanitarians Emma (6) and sister Amelia (8), wanted to draw attention to the plight of children and families in Ukraine after watching news reports about the conflict when it began. They decided to raise funds by conducting a Sunflower and Ukraine-themed art project and auction in their community of Montrose, Colorado. With the help of their parents, Sarah and David, the girls helped to mobilize their community with Sunflowers for Ukraine.
They were able to recruit hundreds of local artists, including school children and community members to produce artwork that was then displayed at local creative businesses and the Montrose Center for the Arts.
Fundraising activities included: a student art exhibit and auction, a sidewalk chalk mural, art classes, jewelry making, a Banana Stand, and Sunflower Stroll on Main Street.
They partnered with local businesses; the Montrose Center for the Arts, Mosaic, Mauve & the Collective, Horsefly Brewing Company,SheShe Boutique, Fabula, Double Barrel Taco Company, Storm King Distilling Company, clearnetworX, Cimarron Coffee and Books, Leah Anderson Art and three Colorado school districts.
Based on the work International Relief Teams conducts around the world and an excellent track record of deploying funds, Amelia and Emma chose International Relief Teams from a short list their parents had prepared.
They were able to raise over $7,000.
Some of the wonderful artwork can be found here.
Thank you, Emma, and Amelia, for your extraordinary efforts to help others in need!
