October 4, 2016 - San Diego-based International Relief Teams (IRT) is sending relief aid to the victims of Hurricane Matthew. The category 4 storm has sustained wind speeds up to 140 miles per hour and has inflicted major damage in the impoverished country of Haiti. The storm could dump up to 40 inches of rain and cause flash floods and mudslides across the country, which still has not fully recovered from the devastating earthquake that killed over 200,000 people six years ago.
In partnership with international organizations MAP International and Hope for Haiti, IRT is airlifting a shipment of medical supplies worth over seven million dollars to Haiti. The shipment includes critical medicines such as antibiotics and analgesics to treat immediate medical emergencies and oral rehydration salts in preparation for a potential cholera outbreak, a disease that often plagues the country after natural disasters.
IRT has more than 28 years of experience in assisting victims of disasters, both nationally and internationally. During its history, IRT has delivered more than $342 million in humanitarian aid to those in desperate need. IRT responded to the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, sending $1.3 million in medicines and medical supplies and providing support to thousands of victims for years after the quake to help them in the recovery process.
San Diego-based International Relief Teams works to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and disaster around the globe, from the forgotten corners of the world to right here at home, by sending volunteer teams and medical supplies to make immediate change for the world’s most vulnerable people.
