Press Release

San Diego-based International Relief Teams (IRT) is pleased to announce a substantial grant award of $985,314 from the S.L. Gimbel Foundation, a component fund at The Inland Empire Community Foundation. The funding will be used for COVID-19 food relief efforts.

Throughout the pandemic, IRT has helped, in a significant way, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank meet the increased demand for food assistance. Since May 2020, IRT has purchased more than $779,000 in food, providing more than 566,000 meals for hungry San Diego families.

With this new funding from the S.L. Gimbel Foundation, IRT will be able to purchase and transport an additional 1.4 million canned food items over the next 12 months, providing another 595,000 meals to the Food Bank.

“International Relief Teams is very grateful to the S.L. Gimbel Foundation for its generous support to help families struggling to feed themselves and their children. This partnership will provide a significant number of San Diego families with the food they need as they recover from the pandemic” said Barry La Forgia, International Relief Teams’ Executive Director.

International Relief Teams alleviates the suffering caused by poverty and disaster around the globe, from the forgotten corners of the world to right here at home, by sending volunteer teams and medical supplies to make immediate change for the world’s most vulnerable people.
