John Stephens

John began his career in international development with Mercy Corps in 2000, serving in a variety of program support and leadership roles in Asia and Africa. His work spanned fundraising, program development, country operations and emergency response. John was a part of Mercy Corps’ Tsunami Response Team in 2004, the Pakistan Earthquake Response Team in 2005 and multiple other emergency responses throughout Asia and Africa between 2000 and 2015. As Mercy Corps’ Director in China, John led Mercy Corps’ response to the Lushan Earthquake in 2013.

In 2015 John joined the Vibrant Village Foundation in Portland, Oregon, where he led the evolution of the foundation’s giving strategy, introducing better impact measurement and more progressive grant-making. In addition to leading the Foundation’s portfolio of 40 grantees in 25 countries, John also managed three Foundation offices in Kenya, Ecuador and Ghana, with 100 staff.

In 2018, John joined The BOMA Project as their next leader and following on the founder’s planned departure. In the span of nearly five years, John tripled BOMA’s revenues, including a MacKenzie Scott grant. Impact numbers also jumped eight-fold, with programs expanding from Kenya to Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, South Sudan and Uganda.

John received a Masters of International Management degree from Portland State University and lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife. They have two grown children.
