Hope Amidst Hardship: How Aid is Changing Lives in Sudan

February 27, 2025

Sudan is on the brink of collapse. Families have been torn apart, homes reduced to rubble, and entire communities have been left with nothing. Hunger and violence go hand in hand, and the innocent—women, children, the elderly—are the ones suffering the most. In the face of relentless war, some have been forced to forage in dangerous territory, only to be attacked, robbed, or worse.

But amid the devastation, the people in Sudan hold onto hope—a future where their children are safe, where food is not a daily uncertainty, and where homes can once again be places of shelter rather than loss.

Hope is fragile, but it remains. And we are doing everything we can to keep that fire burning.

International Relief Teams and its partners have worked tirelessly to bring life-saving aid to families in Sudan. We have provided immediate relief to those on the brink of starvation, and with every act of relief is a person—a mother, a father, a child—whose life has been changed by this support.

Today, we’re sharing the stories of the people whose lives were touched because of your generosity—families who faced unthinkable hardship but found hope through the aid you helped us provide.

Kaltum: A Mother's Fight Against Starvation

Kaltum, a widow and mother of nine, lost everything in the war. With no home, no food, and no way to provide for her children, she resorted to eating tree leaves just to survive.

When she received food assistance from International Relief Teams, she was overcome with gratitude:

We didn’t know what to do during the war that burned everything, green and dry. I lost my husband and was left alone to care for nine children. I thank God because, while I lost much, there are others who lost everything… Even though we have been eating tree leaves to survive, today I am filled with happiness and gratitude because you have provided us with food. Now, my children and I won’t go to bed hungry.

For Kaltum and her children, this aid was the difference between life and death.

Left in the Dark: The Struggle of Two Blind Men for Survival

In Kalma IDP camp, two blind men were identified as some of the most vulnerable. With no family to care for them, they depended entirely on their neighbors' generosity. But as food became scarcer, their survival became uncertain.

When they received food assistance, their gratitude was overwhelming:

Thank you so much. Unfortunately, we do not have eyes to see, but please tell those who helped us that we love them and pray for their well-being. May God prolong their lives. Let them know that we still need them.

Their story is a heartbreaking reminder of those who are often forgotten in crises—people with disabilities who face even greater struggles to survive.

The Stark Reality: The Need for Ongoing Support

To date, we've already provided 479,000 meals, fed 17,589 people and delivered more than 167,551 pounds of food to help families survive another day in Sudan. But there’s still a long way to go. As of this writing, thousands of families still go many days without a meal.

We cannot look away. We cannot wait. Lives are hanging in the balance, and we must act now.

How You Can Help

The war in Sudan has robbed families of everything, but every meal provided, every child saved, and every life touched is proof that together, we can make a difference.
