PUBLIC HEALTH
Health Promotion & Disease Prevention
The worlds most disadvantaged and vulnerable populations
lack access to even the most basic health services. IRT develops efficient
and effective public health programs to meet the needs of these people.
Providing Hope for Children Living with HIV/AIDS
Life-saving anti-retroviral drugs (ARV), recently made available to African
nations, are helping to shift the focus away from death and dying for
children victimized by the AIDS pandemic. IRTs innovative support
programs help hundreds of these youngsters by providing life-skills training,
conducting ARV and AIDS education, and providing educational opportunities
so that these boys and girls can become healthy, active, responsible members
of their communities
Promoting Healthier and More Prosperous Communities
- IRT helps eliminate the source of diseases such as dysentery,
diarrhea, and hepatitis that afflict many families living in unsanitary
conditions by constructing clean water systems and sanitation facilities.
- IRT provides direct financial assistance to resource-poor communities
for improvement of community infrastructure.
- IRT trains community health workers to teach families in poor
communities the importance of taking personal responsibility for their
health, so that community attitudes and values toward health and health
care are transformed.
- IRT supplies medicines to hospitals and clinics in developing
countries to alleviate shortages so that local health providers can
effectively fight disease and illness in their communities.
- IRT provides food to families living with HIV/AIDS to strengthen
them against the disease, and to communities in remote regions experiencing
food shortages.
Since 1988, 254 teams, involving 1,414 volunteers, have participated
in International Relief Teams public health projects worldwide.
