New Hope for Children
in Africa
living with HIV/AIDS!
One of the greatest tragedies of the global AIDS epidemic
is the children who were infected with HIV/AIDS in infancy. Until anti-retroviral
drugs recently became available, these children lived without hope of
ever reaching adulthood.
In
partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine Children's Foundation
- Uganda (BCMF-U) and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic (PIDC) of
Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, International Relief Teams (IRT) has
developed TeenSAVE (Support, Adherence, Vocational
training and Education), a comprehensive support program for adolescents
living with HIV/AIDS -- many of them orphans.
Now that these kids are receiving anti-retroviral
therapy, we are re-directing them from waiting to die towards living successfully
with HIV/AIDS, facing their future with hope, and becoming active and
engaged members of their communities, stated John Waldron, R.N.,
project representative. Through TeenSAVE, we are providing life-skills
training, AIDS education, vocational training and scholarships to help
them complete their education.
For less than 75 cents per child per day, IRT is giving
these children a future they thought they would never have. Click
